How to pick the perfect gemstone
How to pick the perfect gemstone
There are some uniquely beautiful gemstones available to buy nowadays, so much so that it can sometimes be difficult to decide which one to pick. Whether you are looking for fashion jewellery or something a little more spectacular for that special occasion, knowing which one to choose can sometimes be a little tricky. It is not just the stones themselves that you may want to consider when making your selection; there is also the colour of the setting that is used as well. Here is our handy guide to the things that you should consider when picking the perfect gemstone for your next piece of jewellery.
Skin tone
You might be surprised to learn just how much of a difference your skin tone contributes when it comes to selecting the right gemstone. But in the same way, as some people tend to avoid certain clothing colours because they do not work well for them, the same can be said of both gemstones and even the type of gold you might prefer. You might not have realised it, but subconsciously most of us are attracted to one type of gold more than another, and this is the reason.
Cool skin tone
Those people with a cool skin tone – your veins appear blue, you have lighter coloured eyes, blonde, black or dark brown hair and unfortunately tend to burn easily in the sun – will find that ruby jewellery or something with a purple or blue gemstone will be more suited to their complexion. These are rich, deeper colours that work well with cool tones. Cool skin tones are also a very good match for white metals such as silver or white gold.
Warm skin tone
If you have a warm skin tone – your veins may appear greener, you have green, hazel or bright blue eyes, light blond or red hair and you tan easily, you may also have darker skin – then you can carry off a gemstone that is yellow, green or even orange. This warmer skin tone naturally pairs well with yellow metals, so yellow gold is the perfect setting for pendants and fashion jewellery.
Neutral skin tone
There is a third skin tone category. Those people who have a neutral skin tone tend to have no obvious olive, redness, or espresso colour in the skin. In general, people with a neutral skin tone tend to find that cool skin tone shades work well for them.
Diamond jewellery
Diamonds are one of those gemstones that look good with any skin tone. After all, as the saying goes, they really are a girl’s best friend. However, a good diamond jeweller will still advise that it is worth taking skin tone into consideration when selecting diamond jewellery. So, if you have a cool skin tone, you might wish to pair your diamond with white gold, and for a warm skin tone a yellow gold. Rose gold will not only work well with diamond but also with any skin tone, which makes it a particularly good combination if you are purchasing diamond jewellery for someone else.
